Periodontology is a specialty in dentistry comprising the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pathologies of the gums, also known as periodontic diseases.

These infections damage gum tissue near the teeth as a result of the mineralisation of the bacterial coat.

Gum Disease

The most significant pathologies of the gums are gingivitis and periodontal disease. The former is an inflammation of the gums due to a prolific bacterial coat. It is treatable but unless it is caught early enough it can lead to periodontal disease, an irreversible condition.

Periodontitis represents a progression of gingivitis. As the name implies, it affects the periodontium. This is the system of tissues supporting the tooth: the gums, the periodontal ligament, the jaw bone and the cementum. Therefore, advanced periodonitis can cause teeth to fall out because they have lost their support.

Origins of Gum Disease

Some of the possible origins of gum disease are:

  • Poor oral hygiene: If this is not performed correctly, the risk of plaque formation around the tooth and under the gum line increases, such that the periodontium may be damaged.
  • Tabacco: Consumption of this stimulant favours the persistence of bacterial coats in the mouth.
  • Pregnancy: During gestation, gums are typically more sensitive than usual and therefore more susceptible to periodontitis.
  • Diseases: Certain afflictions, such as diabetes, AIDS and cancer, are often accompanied by gum disease.
  • Medications: Certain formulations can render teeth more sensitive and weaken the gums. You should consult your doctor and stay well informed.

Preventing Gum Disease

You have to acquire several key habits in order to avoid periodontitis. Some of these are:

Oral Hygiene

  • Use a toothbrush with soft bristles and brush your teeth with short, slow movements. Feel free to ask us to show you how.
  • Change your toothbrush every three months, because worn bristles are less effective at removing plaque.
  • Use dental floss and mouthwash to clean the parts your toothbrush cannot reach.
  • Interdental brushes and oral irrigators are useful accessories for your oral hygiene routine.

Healthful Diet

Maintain a healthful diet to protect your teeth and mouth. Avoid very sugary and very acidic foodstuffs as these encourage the growth of the bacterial coat.

Visit your dentist

Visit your dentist at least twice a year. Regular check-ups let us catch gum disease early so its progress can be slowed before it is too late.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

Some of the most common symptoms are:

  • Inflamed gums
  • Receding gum line
  • Dark or violet gums
  • Halitosis
  • Bleeding gums

Periodontic Treatments

Some of the most common treatments are:

  • Scraping: This removes plaque and bacteria from the teeth and gums.
  • Root Smoothing: The surfaces of the roots are smoothed to impede the regrowth of plaque.
  • Periodontal Surgery: This restores the jaw bone and prevents excessive mobility of the tooth.
  • Periodontal Surgery with Micro-Transplants: The receded gum line is covered to improve the aesthetics and health of the gum.
